How do I recover a deleted file without resetting everything?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"For an unstaged deletion, use
git restore -- path/to/file
. If you staged the deletion, restore the path from
HEAD
with
--staged --worktree
. Does git reflog recover uncommitted changes?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Reflog records reference movements, not a history of every edit. It can help locate a lost commit after a reset, rebase, or amend. For uncommitted content, inspect the index, stashes, surviving blobs, or editor history instead. Can I recover files after git clean -fd?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Possibly, through editor history, backups, cloud copies, or disk recovery. The command removes untracked files and directories. If Git never stored their content, its history cannot restore them. Why does git pull say up to date when files are missing?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Pull integrates remote history; it does not promise to recreate every missing working-tree file when no new commits need integration. Where does Git put lost-found files?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"For a standard repository,
git fsck --lost-found
writes dangling recovery objects under
.git/lost-found/commit/
or
.git/lost-found/other/
. Blob entries contain file content, but they usually lack original filenames. In linked worktrees, locate the actual Git metadata directory before looking for these folders."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"7. Can Magic Data Recovery restore the whole Git repository?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It may recover surviving files from the affected storage, but file recovery does not guarantee an intact repository. Git also needs consistent objects, references, and metadata. Recover source files to another drive first, validate their contents, and rebuild from a known-good repository if metadata remains incomplete."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"8. Does restoring an older Git version recover my latest edits?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No. Restoring from a commit gives you the version that commit contains.
